Fun Summer Activities For Kids: Blanket Fort Night!

What could be more fun than a camp out? How about a camp out in your front room!

I’m a work-at-home-mom. It is now summer vacation. Amidst a few other challenges we’ve had in the past few months, it’s now time for me to figure out some fun activities to do with the kids to keep them entertained and learning…and to free up some time for me to work!

Today, my Dolphin (age 7), decided we were long overdue for a blanket fort night. I promised we would have a camp out when school was out, so today was the day!

The boys spent hours constructing their blanket fort. They did most of the work by themselves, too! I must say, I am impressed. The Dolphin even made the extra effort to create a sign for anyone who happened to stroll by. (YAY! He’s practicing writing without my nudging!)

Here is a list of supplies:

  • 4 dining room table chairs
  • 2 lawn chairs
  • 1 folding chair
  • 5 king sized blankets/sheets
  • Pillows for added fort comfort
  • Clothespins (to reduce risk of fort cave-ins)
  • Extra blankets
  • Popcorn
  • Free Willy 4 on Netflix

Now the boys are finally asleep, cozy in their nest of blankets, pillows and snuggle toys. This mama is out on the patio with a cup of tea taking a moment to enjoy a gorgeous Seattle evening. I must admit I feel a bit intoxicated with gratitude as I breathe in the fresh pine-scented air while basking in the glow of my patio lights. My boys are healthy. They are growing up. They know how to play together to create awesome things. They were proud of their creation and excited to show off their handiwork and invite me into their world. In spite of all the rough patches and bumps in the road, I think I’m doing okay.

I’d better keep an eye out for any visiting banana slugs. Time to get to work! (And resist the urge to get on Pinterest for some patio decorating ideas–like this one. :) )

I’d love to hear from YOU! Do you have blanket fort nights at your house?
